Requirements: Notes from PMI Mile Hi Chapter Meeting (4/8/03)
Summary
As
part of PMI Mile Hi Chapter's encouragement of excellence in project
management, Monte Malenke, CEO of Projectricity, was invited to
speak about "Real-World Requirements Management". Several highlights
from his presentation on April 8, 2003, included:
- Requirements Management is of more and more interest; companies
cannot afford to continue losing money in mismanaged projects.
- Failures are often attributed to unknown user-target groups
(and their needs), lack of user involvement, and incomplete
or changing requirements and specifications.
- "Fixes" related to requirements errors account for 56% of
program maintenance and 82% of the effort to fix.
- "Good" requirements include a series of characteristics that
allow for testing, tracking and communicating.
- Try to capture and approve requirements electronically
during a meeting rather than hoping to get all the input
in subsequent emails and follow-up reviews.
